A Family Affair: Exhibition Opening “Kunst als Hobby und Leidenschaft – Spuren eines Lebens” in Trier

ERA regularly showcases local artistic talent through changing exhibitions. Its foyer, cafeteria, and glass gallery provide generous space and light, making the Academy an inviting setting for paintings, graphics, photographs, and sculpture.

The latest exhibition – the 99th to be hosted at ERA – features work by Dr Alfred Kuckartz, a retired surgeon based in Daun, Germany. Entitled “Kunst als Hobby und Leidenschaft – Spuren eines Lebens” (“Art as a Hobby and Passion – Traces of a Life”), it is the result of his life-long passion for expressing his emotions through painting and a visual record of how art became both a counterbalance to a demanding clinical vocation and a medium for inner exploration.

Kuckartz’s artworks resist easy classification, mixing styles and topics freely, inviting the viewer to consider their own emotions and attach their own meanings as they encounter the “traces” left by the artist on the canvas. Or, in his own words, “Bildet euch ein, was ihr wollt – alles ist erlaubt.” (“Imagine whatever you like – everything is allowed”).

The formal opening on 25 September by ERA’s Deputy Director Lilian Erbel, who invited viewers to engage with the artworks on their own terms, was accompanied by songs and live music by Kuckartz’s granddaughter Paulina Schmitz, turning the event into a family affair.
