In December 2011, Directive 2011/99/EU on the European Protection Order (EPO) was adopted, marking a step forward in the legal protection afforded to crime victims in the EU on the basis of the principle of mutual recognition.
The EPO is accompanied by the legislative package launched by the European Commission in June 2011, containing a Directive on minimum standards on the rights, support and protection of victims of crime and a Regulation on mutual recognition of protection measures in civil matters. The seminar will look at the content of the new EU legal provisions, on the state of play of implementation as well as judicial practice in the Member States with respect to the procedural safeguards and access to justice available to crime victims in the EU, especially in cross-border cases.
