Objective
This course will introduce legal practitioners to practical aspects of European criminal justice.Key topics
- The institutional framework of European criminal justice
- Brexit and cross-border cooperation in criminal matters: state of play
- The work of the new European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO)
- Gathering of (e-)evidence: the European Investigation Order and forthcoming European Production and Preservation Orders
- EU legislation on terrorism, cybercrime, migrant smuggling and THB as well as new initiatives regarding environmental crime, racism and xenophobia
- Cooperation with Eurojust, Europol, and the European Judicial Network
- Solving conflicts of jurisdiction
- The rights to interpretation and translation, information, access to a lawyer, legal aid and procedural safeguards for children suspected or accused in criminal proceedings
- The new Regulation on freezing and confiscation of proceeds of crime
- Criminal records and the supervision of pre-trial detention, custodial sentences and probation
- The jurisdiction of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) in criminal matters
- The new strategy 2020-2025 for victims’ rights in the EU
- Looking ahead: digitalisation of criminal justice

The summer course will be hosted on ERA’s own online training platform. You will be able to interact immediately and directly with our top-quality speakers and other participants, break out into working groups and work collaboratively on case studies and quizzes. We will make the most of the technical tools available to deliver an intensive, interactive training experience. As the platform is hosted on our own server, the highest security settings will be applied to ensure that you can participate safely in a high-quality online training environment.
