On 6 September 2017, Koen Geens, Minister of Justice of Belgium, and Dr Wolfgang Heusel, Director of ERA, signed the formal agreement on Belgium’s accession to ERA. The ceremony took place in the Ministry of Justice in Brussels. Belgium is the 27th EU Member State to become a patron of the Academy of European Law (ERA) Foundation. Estonia is the only Member State that has not yet acceded to the ERA Foundation.

In his introductory remarks, Dr Geens said: “as a European optimist, I am happy to sign the accession document with ERA. Especially in times of crises the European Union has shown in the past that it will develop further. Everything is now prepared for Belgium to become an official founder of the Academy of European Law.”

“I am very happy to welcome Belgium as a new patron”, said Dr Heusel. “For many years we have been in close cooperation with Belgian institutions such as the national judicial training institute IFJ/IGO and with the Ministry of Justice itself. Many Belgian participants attended ERA events in the last 25 years and numerous top EU law experts from Belgium have made valuable contributions to our work. The accession will bring this excellent relationship to a new level and provide an official framework”, he concluded. Dr Heusel said he was particularly happy that the efforts supported by the late Advocate General Walter van Gerven to secure his home country’s accession to ERA had finally come to a successful conclusion.

Belgium will now have a seat on the ERA Governing Board and actively participate in its strategic development. Belgian public servants and judicial officials will now also enjoy a special patrons’ discount on participation in ERA events.

The Academy of European Law (ERA) promotes the good practice of European law by providing training and a forum for debate to all legal professionals. It is a public foundation, created in 1992 at the initiative of the European Parliament.
