Whisperers of Contrast – 11th EDEN Conference
At this high-profile event around 200 law enforcement officers, data protection officers, academics and other legal professionals explored data protection issues in law enforcement across different jurisdictions. They also discussed the balance between security concerns and individual rights as well as how to achieve effective policing whilst protecting privacy and civil liberties.
Both days were filled with various panels, talks and keynotes delivered by over 40 speakers.
Among the many highlights was a talk by Mikko Hyppönen, Computer Security Expert from WithSecure, who addressed vulnerabilities in smart devices, including smartphones, with potential consequences for individuals and law enforcement.
Rik Ferguson, Vice President of Security Intelligence at Forescout illustrated how valuable skills required for the board game Dungeons & Dragons are also applicable in the field of cybersecurity, such as risk management, collaboration, planning, communication and adaptability.
A session entitled “Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This” dived into the latest trends in facial recognition and its real-time surveillance applications, along with potential privacy and data protection issues.
Finally, looking towards the future, the last panel debated how to address the challenges and anticipated changes in the coming years whilst ensuring compatibility with the protection of fundamental rights for all people.
