EU Criminal Law for Defence Counsel

Objective

This seminar is part of an EU-wide project to train defence lawyers on European criminal justice instruments and cooperation. Special focus will be given to the practical defence in cases of European Arrest Warrants as well as the new measures taken under the EU roadmap for procedural rights

  • The effects of European criminal law on the daily practice of defence lawyers in EU Member States
  • The impact of the new Directives on the rights to interpretation and translation, the right to information, and the right to access to a lawyer in criminal proceedings
  • Practical defence in EAW cases and potential novelties under the proposed Directive on legal aid in EAW proceedings
  • The application of mutual recognition instruments such as freezing and confiscation orders from a defence perspective

Speakers

The seminar will be led by distinguished defence lawyers with long-standing experience in cross-border cases.


Methodology

The programme will offer a mixture of training methods, varying from lectures to interactive workshops. In order to ensure the practical relevance of the training, the workshops will focus on national case studies.

Website

Through a subsite on defence rights on ERA’s website, all interested practitioners have the opportunity to consult all relevant legal texts and papers and to benefit from the speakers’ contributions collected during the series.

Networking opportunities

Participants will have the opportunity to exchange best practice and experience by establishing personal contacts. Participants will learn about the current possibilities, projects and platforms to build an EU-wide criminal defence network.

Participation

The project is co-financed by the European Commission under the Criminal Justice Programme (2007-2013).

Seminar fee including documentation: € 125
€50 for participants from Athens who do not request reimbursement of their travel and accommodation costs.

Travel: € 0
Travel costs are reimbursed by ERA upon receipt of the original invoices up to €300 for participants from Ireland, Malta, Romania and the UK; and up to €150 for Greek participants.
In case of no-show, ERA will not reimburse incurred travel costs.

Accommodation
Accommodation for 2 nights will be booked and covered by ERA.
In case of no-show, ERA will charge the costs of the hotel to the participant.

Catering
Coffee breaks are included. ERA will invite all participants for a joint dinner.


Who should attend?

The seminar is tailor-made for criminal defence lawyers from Greece, Ireland, Romania and the UK. The seminar is open to participants from Malta.
