Jubilee Congress about the future of the EU with experts from the judiciary from all over Europe. Since 25 years the Academy of European Law provides a forum of discussion about European Law and a networking institution among legal professionals from private and public sectors.
The rule of law was recently highlighted by the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker in his 2017 State of the Union address as one of the three key principles of European development, alongside freedom and equality.
The majority of the EU’s heads of state and government, particularly France’s President Macron and the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, have also underlined the importance of a common understanding of the rule of law which clearly, and unequivocally, establishes rules for cooperation between the different Member States.
A functioning and independent judiciary is indispensable for ensuring freedom of society. The European treaties set out the core values that determine European law. They set the direction of the compass needle for the judiciary in Europe.
With this in mind, the 25th anniversary congress of the Academy of European Law in Trier will centre on one of the most pressing questions facing Europe today – do we still believe in the authority of EU law? The debates will focus on the levels of disparity in compliance across Member States, the understanding of national courts and the context of the future development of the EU.
