EU legislation and regulation are meant to facilitate and foster the transition towards a net-zero and green economy. While the net-zero and green transition need to be effected mainly in the real economy, EU legislation initially focused on the financial services industry, in order to influence and redirect finance flows towards sustainable business activities. However, experience has shown that real economy enterprises themselves require a reasonable and reliable regulatory framework for sustainability purposes within which they can operate and proceed. Over the past about two years, we have now seen additional specific rules governing the activities and conduct of real economy enterprises – not necessarily exclusively, but directly addressing and obliging them. Such rules in particular focus on corporate governance and reporting as key areas for achieving corporate sustainability. Speaker
