Objective

The purpose of this course is to provide a thorough introduction to practical aspects of European criminal justice.

  • The institutional framework of European criminal justice from 1 December 2014 – the end of the Lisbon Treaty’s transitional phase
  • Priorities in European criminal law under the EU Justice Agenda for 2020
  • The new jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice and the interplay with national criminal law
  • Tools for mutual legal assistance in criminal matters
  • Instruments for mutual recognition in criminal matters in the EU: 10 years with the European Arrest Warrant, the new European Investigation Order, freezing and confiscation of proceeds of crime
  • The role and tasks of Eurojust, the European Judicial Network, OLAF, and the future European Public Prosecutor
  • EU legislation regarding serious cross-border crime such as trafficking in human beings and cybercrime
  • Police cooperation in the EU and the work of Europol
  • Procedural safeguards and defence rights: the new Directives on the rights to interpretation and translation, the right to information, and access to a lawyer.
  • Victims’ rights in the EU: the new Directive establishing minimum standards and the European Protection Order

Visit to the European Court of Justice

Participants in this summer course will also have the opportunity to visit the Court of Justice of the EU in Luxembourg.

Workshop on legal English

The course will include a chance to brush up on your English terminology on European criminal law in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.

Participants in this summer course will also have the opportunity to visit the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. The number of places is limited by the Court for practical reasons to 35. These places will be allocated to the first 35 participants.
