“European law is something that Bosnian lawyers should be aware of if we want to be fully prepared to provide good legal services to our clients once our country becomes an EU Member State.” Says Đorđe Dimitrijević, one of this summer’s scholarship recipients. As in previous years, the Friends of ERA sponsored around 20 legal practitioners to attend ERA’s summer courses.

As accession becomes a more imminent reality, legal practitioners in the candidate countries increasingly need to become familiar with European law. This year we awarded scholarships to participants from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Ukraine, all countries on the road to EU membership.

They each attended a summer course related to their legal field of expertise. Mimoza Kodhelaj, Director of the Albanian Competition Authority, applied for the summer course on antitrust law. She is also Vice-Chair of the Intergovernmental Working Group on European Integration for Competition Policy in Albania. "Through this scholarship, I gained new insights into how to identify and assess antitrust cases in line with EU best practices, especially in the new challenge for competition authorities: digital markets," she says about the course.

The 3-5 day courses introduce participants to European law in their respective fields of law. The programme includes not only presentations, but also workshops, discussions and often a visit to the Court of Justice. There, participants attend a hearing, with a briefing on the case beforehand, followed by a guided tour of the building. In the evenings, participants have the opportunity to meet and network with colleagues from other jurisdictions at dinners, guided walking tours of Trier and wine tastings.

The ERA scholarship programme was set up to enable legal practitioners from EU Member States and candidate countries, who could not otherwise afford to do so, to participate in legal training in European law. Scholarships are funded by the Friends of ERA Association. If you would like to support the scholarship programme, please visit The Friends of ERA – Committed to European Law.
