Get up-dated with the latest developments, legislative initiatives and case law in European Media Law 02./03.June 2016 in Brussels.

“One of our biggest challenges: to ensure that we provide a legislative framework which allows the cultural and creative sectors to fully exploit the new possibilities open to them in the digital age, while making more of our high quality European content legally available to users.”, refers Commissioner Navracsics*.

The actual status and introduction to the roadmap of the Digital Single Market Strategy 2015-2018 will be part of the presentation by a member of cabinet of Commissioner Günther Oettinger.

The Audiovisual Media Service Directive (AVMSD) under review will be topic of discussion with voices from the practice.

Recently the European Commission published the initial findings of its e-commerce Sector Inquiry and its consultation on geo-blocking and its effect on the e-commerce market within the EU. The legislative proposal is supposed to be published in May 2016, just before our annual conference on European Media Law.

The cross-border aspects of media landscape will be part of the discussion as well as the review of the Satellite and Cable Directive (SatCab). Additionally a follow-up of the public consultation on the role of online platforms and the latest jurisprudence of the Court of Justice of the European Union will be presented and discussed.

Finally, the annual conference on European Media Law will give media service providers an overview about competition law issues relevant for the audiovisual service sector, fundamental rights and data protection facing media and technical convergence. The restriction to media pluralism in some member states will also be topic of discussion as well as the application of the rule of law in the EU.
