International Surrender of Persons

  • A Transcontinental Approach

Lisbon, 6 October 2016 – 7 October 2016
Language:

Event number:
316DP60

Areas of law:

Objective

The conference will examine the current international legal framework concerning the surrender of persons with a comparison of the existing reality in different regions of the globe.

The systems in force in the European Union (EU), China, Russia and the USA, as well as the major current trends in practice in South America and Africa, will be analysed and compared in detail by leading experts and practitioners.

At EU level, the event will focus on the European Arrest Warrant (EAW), which replaced the extradition system by requiring each national judicial authority (the “executing” authority) to recognise, with a minimum of formalities, requests for the surrender of a person made by the judicial authority of another Member State (the “issuing” authority). Examples of best practice and practical national experiences will be presented and discussed.

Key topics

  • Extradition and surrender of persons in China, Russia, USA, Europe, South America and Africa
  • A continental and a common law approach within the European Union
  • Roles and powers of Eurojust

Who should attend?

Judges, prosecutors, lawyers in private practice and ministry officials active in the field of EU criminal law.

Portuguese citizens

Portuguese citizens are granted a special discount for the conference, 30 € or 55 € dinner included. Please contact lklopocki@era.int for registration.
