EuroMed Justice Conference on joint criminal investigations

The conference aimed to strengthen the capacity of criminal justice authorities from South Partner Countries (SPCs) in the Middle East and North Africa and European Union Member States to fight serious and organised crime.
Among the 50 participants from 15 countries were prosecutors, judges, and criminal defence lawyers, along with delegates from EuroMed Justice, Eurojust, international organisations and EU agencies.
During the conference, Virgil Constantin Ivan-Cucu, the Programme Coordinator for EuroMed Justice, presented a groundbreaking practical tool on joint investigations, parallel investigations and spontaneous exchange of information. This tool is the first of its kind and provides concrete assistance to criminal justice authorities in their fight against organised crime.
In addition, Eurojust and the JITs Network Secretariat shared insights on the establishment of joint investigation teams (JITs) and presented the Guidelines on JITs involving third countries jointly prepared by the two organisations. Delegates from the individual SPCs shared their experience with the other participants.
‘’This conference is a step forward to the achievement of operational outcomes of the judicial cooperation process between SPCs and EU Member States supported by the EuroMed Justice Programme.’’ said Ivan-Cucu.
EuroMed Justice is a capacity-building programme implemented by Eurojust to develop a sustainable cross-regional mechanism of judicial cooperation in criminal matters between EU Member States, the South Partner Countries and EU Agencies.
