Eurojust was formally established by Council Decision in 2002 as the European Union’s judicial cooperation unit with its headquarters in The Hague. The mission of Eurojust is to stimulate and improve coordination and cooperation among the competent judicial authorities of the EU Member States in relation to serious cross-border and organised crime. Eurojust has greatly evolved in its first 10 years of existence. During this first decade, Eurojust has also faced the challenge of EU enlargements, the establishment of numerous cooperation agreements with third States, international organisations and EU bodies and agencies, and the introduction of a revised legal basis to strengthen its operational capabilities. Looking at the years to come, discussions on Eurojust’s future have already begun. Current reflections concern the reform of Eurojust’s structure and Eurojust’s possible role in the creation of a European Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Key topics

  • Impact of Council Decision 2009/426/JHA of 16 December 2008 on the strengthening of Eurojust
  • Expectations from the forthcoming Commission proposal for a new draft Regulation on Eurojust
  • Prospects for a European Public Prosecutor’s Office established from Eurojust
  • Cooperation with other EU bodies and third States
