Eight organisations representing the legal professions in Europe are meeting in Brussels for the second Forum of Legal Professions entitled “The Media and the Legal Professions”.

Throughout the day, legal and media experts will discuss cooperation between the media and the judiciary, two pillars of Democratic States.

Simone Cuomo, Secretary General of the CCBE, one of ERA’s partners in this project, underlines the importance of this year’s topic. “As the saying goes, “justice must not only be done, it must also be seen to be done”, and the media plays an integral role in this narrative. The essence lies in the fact that without fair and accurate communication about court cases, and in addition, accurate reporting about the events that lead to the case itself, justice cannot truly be seen to be done. In this regard, the key question is: How can this be achieved in a responsible manner? How can legal professionals and journalists collaborate effectively to ensure that reporting about court cases and the events leading to these cases, upholds the fundamental right to a fair trial? We look forward to finding answers to these questions.”

Sabine Metajka Vice-President of the European Association of Judges (EAJ), who will also moderate one of today’s roundtable discussions, explains that the judicial professions have a duty to uphold the rule of law and democratic values in general. “It is therefore important to have a network and a common platform. The topic of 2023, ‘The media and the legal professions’, is a good example how we can share our experiences and discuss different point of views to elaborate best practices and create awareness.”

Around 400 participants will be following the event online. You can register for the full event here: ERA – Academy of European Law > The Media and the Legal Professions

The EU Forum of the Legal Professions aims to provide a structured dialogue among the legal professions in Europe, where common challenges and concerns can be addressed and analysed.

Facilitated by the Academy of European Law, it brings together the European Network of Councils for the Judiciary (ENCJ), the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE), the European Association of Judges (EAJ), the Association of European Administrative Judges (AEAJ), ACA-Europe, the Network of the Presidents of the Supreme Judicial Courts of the EU, the European Union of Judicial Officers (UEHJ) and the European Union of Rechtspfleger (EUR).
