European Parliament backs portable pension rights
ERA conference to discuss acquisition and preservation of supplementary pension rights
The Directive aims at ensuring mobile workers do not lose supplementary pension rights fully or partially financed by their employers when moving to another country in the EU. Current rules protect only statutory pension rights paid by the state.
Under the new legislation, supplementary pension rights will have to be guaranteed at the latest after three years of active membership in a pension scheme run by the employer. The rights of workers who leave such a pension scheme before retirement must be preserved and treated fairly in comparison to employees who are members of the scheme until retirement. The Directive also includes right to be informed about pension rights in case they move abroad.
Cross-border workers will benefit from the same rights as workers moving to another EU Member State.
The Directive still needs to be formally adopted by the Council.
The conference will focus on social security coordination and workers’ mobility. Audronė Morkūnienė, Attaché for Social Security and Labour at the Permanent Representation of Lithuania to the EU, will discuss acquisition and preservation of supplementary pension rights.
