News from the Friends of ERA
German Chapter
The German Chapter welcomed nearly 40 Friends of ERA to an online discussion with Katarina Barley, Vice-President of the European Parliament.
The conversation was frank and thought-provoking from the start, focusing on the new composition of the European Parliament and the growing influence of the far-right political groups.
The discussion focused on the rise of right-wing populism in Germany and across the EU, and the role of fear in making society vulnerable to disinformation campaigns. In this context, the emerging challenges in the management of migration and asylum and how the EU is currently responding to both, internal and external pressures were discussed.
Another topic was the future relationship between the EU and the UK after Brexit, following the elections and change of government in the latter. This is an issue close to Barley's heart as a dual British and German national.
As the group discussed these complex challenges, the conversation reinforced the necessity to remain committed and to work together on shaping Europe's future.
The event was organised by Prof. Dr. Ulrich Rommelfanger, Chair of the German Chapter, and co-hosted by Dr. Julia Laffranque, Executive Board Member of the Friends of ERA.
Portuguese Chapter
The Portuguese Chapter held a wine tasting event for its members in Porto. Around 15 Friends gathered at the O Terreiro restaurant where they were introduced to the wine making process in the Douro Valley, famous for its wine. The event was hosted by Carlos de Almeida Lemos, President of the Portuguese Chapter.
