Chemical substances play an important role in food production and consumption. As food additives they prolong the shelf life of foods and as colours and flavourings they may make foods more attractive. The use of chemical substances in food products is therefore of major concern for the food industry. As the contamination of foodstuffs by chemicals can represent a risk for the consumer and the environment, the European Union has introduced a wide range of legislative measures designed to protect foodstuffs all along the production chain.
The conference will give participants an overview of several legislative proposals concerning food enzymes, food flavouring and food additives, residues of pesticides or contaminants in food and will offer an analysis of the new Directive
2008/5 on food additives and of Regulation
282/2008 on recycled plastic materials and articles. The new proposed Regulation
(COM(2006)388) on pesticides and the placing of plant protection products on the market - expected to be adopted in 2009 - will also be discussed.
Moreover, the conference will highlight the link between food chemical safety and other pieces of legislation in the fields of agricultural law, environmental law and REACH.
