Under this title, ERA Trier presented a group exhibition by the ‘Alte Druckerei’ art collective in Trier. The collective was founded in 2007 and comprises seven artists.

The exhibition’s title poses a question – and depending on one’s perspective, the answer varies. For instance, the answers to the specific question: “Can you make a living from your art?” might be: “yes”, “no”, “to a certain extent”, “hmm”, “…” For others, standing before the works, it is a thought experiment: “Could you make a living from your art?”

But the exhibition raises further questions: Does the viewer’s perspective on a work change if they know that the artist has to make a living from it? Is art assessed differently when there is an economic necessity behind it? And conversely: Does an artist who is dependent on sales create differently – more freely or less freely – than someone for whom art does not have to put bread on the table?

The Kunsthaus Crew come from a variety of life circumstances: some create alongside a full-time job or in retirement, whilst one person lives exclusively from their art. What unites them is their high standards – towards themselves, their craft and the impact of their works. On display are works in mixed media, screen printing, painting, drawing, printmaking, photography and wood art. Seven techniques, seven approaches, one question: What is a work of art worth – and to whom?

As guests of the exhibition, the Year 12 and 13 Foundation Courses in Fine Art at Saarburg Grammar School are presenting works that explore the exhibition’s theme from an artistic perspective.

Painting and Photography – Anni Jutz and Georg Worecki

This exhibition brings together two artistic approaches that engage with abstraction, experimentation and perception in very different ways.

Anni Jutz, an artist originally from Rittersdorf who now lives in Bitburg, has devoted herself to free painting for many years. Her works stem from spontaneity and a passion for experimentation, showcasing a captivating array of materials, including acrylic paints, collages, self-made pigment paints, sand, and coffee powder.

In contrast, Georg Worecki’s photographic works stem from his German-Polish-Italian heritage and his career as a director and photographer. The pieces on display stem from an early experimental phase of his digital practice. By making deliberate movements during the shooting process, he creates visual worlds that resemble abstract paintings and exist somewhere between reality and dissolution. Worecki lived and worked in Luxembourg from 2012 to 2017, and now resides in Daleiden, Eifel. His work is held in public and private collections in Europe and the USA.

Two artistic approaches. Two styles. A shared journey.

The exhibition, titled ‘Two Lives for Art’, brings together painting and sculpture, colour and form, emotion and structure. This exhibition showcases the work of two artists for whom art is not just a profession, but a way of life.

Dorette Polnauer started her artistic journey by studying graphic design in Stuttgart, and has devoted herself to painting for the past 40 years. Her works thrive on reduction and depth, with subtle layers of colour and transparencies, and an interplay between the inner and outer worlds. Nature, movement and time leave their mark on her paintings.

Achim Blankenhorn approaches things differently. His artistic language is clear, minimalist and powerful. Although he engages with materiality, space and construction, a poetic tension can still be felt in his works.

Dr. Alfred Kuckartz

Under the title ‘Art as a hobby and a passion – traces of a life’, ERA presents the works of a man whose life story is as impressive as his paintings.

Dr Alfred Kuckartz, a doctor and artist from the Düren district, now lives in his adopted home of Daun. There, he worked for over 28 years as chief physician of general surgery and later as acting head of the emergency room. Even after his retirement, he remains true to his calling: to this day, he is still involved as an emergency doctor and prison doctor at Wittlich Prison – a doctor with heart and dedication!

He devotes himself to painting with the same passion. For him, it has always been more than just a balance to the demanding everyday life of the clinic – it has become a source of strength, a mirror of inner thoughts and feelings. Joy, doubts and dreams found their expression on canvas and paper.

This exhibition not only displays works of art, but also tells a life story. It invites you to meet a man who leaves his mark with both scalpel and brush.

Under the title ‘EXIL > ERA > NOW’, twelve artists from Atelier EXIL Trier are presenting their current works in the rooms of the ERA. The exhibition brings together works that not only impress with their aesthetic power, but also focus on social, humanistic and sustainable themes.

Founded in 2022, Atelier EXIL is an open community of currently 22 artists. Their common goal is to use artistic means to take a stand, provide impetus and create spaces for reflection and dialogue. The diversity of artistic forms of expression ranges from painting, sculpture and ceramics to photography, printmaking and mixed media.

A transdisciplinary artistic project

Water spoor is a transdisciplinary artistic project that proposes a cross between different geographies, objects and people, where artists explore the displacement of migrants in relation to the tensions that are established in the framework of cultural identity. Reflected on the feeling provoked of what is being the son or grandson of immigrants, as heirs of an experience of no return, land that is not one’s own and to which there is a need to revisit.

Intimate works are presented, developed from compilations of oral recollections and found objects, which have been passed down through the generations, as witnesses to people’s displacements. They have been transformed, reinterpreted as artistic devices through paintings, engravings, photographs and installations. What is treasured? What is it that lasts? What stories accompany these objects? What stories are transmitted?

The Kultur- und Kunstverein Trier e.V. (KUKT for short) invites art lovers and interested parties to its third annual exhibition. As the KUKT artists work with different painting techniques and styles, variety and diversity are guaranteed at the exhibition. Whether acrylic, watercolour, drawing, photography, video installation or sculpture, the exhibited works of art showcase the diversity and individuality of the participating artists. It is an interesting mix that gives visitors an insight into the work of the individual artists.
